CERTIFICATE COURSE IN MARINE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT
|
Why a course on marine fisheries management? With over 8000 km of coastline and nearly 3 million tonnes of annual catch, India is one of the front runners in marine fish production in the world. Nearly a million people are dependant on marine fish as a livelihood source and the value realized is nearly Rs. 25,000 crores. Any natural resource which is continually and sustainably exploited at such high levels needs administrative and management inputs. Management of marine fishery resources is a complex science and this has been addressed for the past 60 years by the premier marine fisheries institute in the country – the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) with its headquarters at Cochin and 10 research centres distributed all along the Indian coast. A large knowledge base and expertise has been built up over the years by CMFRI and now the institute plans to impart this science to interested stakeholders through a 3-month certificate course. The first batch of the course will commence on 17 th September 2008. |
